Frequently Asked Questions

What is banking law?
While there is no consensus on the definition of this, or many other branches of law, banking law can best be described as the branch of law regulating various aspects of banking operations. In other words, banking law encompasses the regulations that govern sustainable financial operations of banks, corporate governance, banking activities, financial instruments, and relationships with clients.

Banking law may also cover other financial institutions when they engage in traditional banking activities, such as granting loans or providing payment services. Its broad scope includes many aspects of corporate and commercial law, securities law, and administrative law.
If you have never dealt with banking law and are unsure if it is the right field for you, start with the basics. Are you interested in civil law, particularly obligations, commercial, corporate, and tax law? If the answer is yes, banking law will feel familiar. By following the Association’s activities, reading articles, and participating in events we organize, you will quickly gain foundational knowledge about this dynamic field of law.

One of the Association’s primary goals is to make banking law more accessible to students, scholars, and practitioners from other disciplines.

The Association for Banking Law offers three membership types: Permanent Members, for those with significant contributions and expertise in banking law; Associate Members, for professionals, scholars, and students with an interest in the field; and Honorary Members, for distinguished individuals in banking and financial law.

To learn more about the membership categories and application process, check out about us page or reach out through our contact form.

The Association for Banking Law offers several membership types, including associate membership, which is available to students who demonstrate a particular interest in banking law and show commitment in their academic pursuits.

Anyone who dedicates themselves to banking law is assured of an exemplary career. The complexity of banking law naturally deters legal professionals who avoid challenges. Whether in law practice, corporate roles, commercial banking, judiciary, or academia, experts in banking law will always be in demand.

The dynamic evolution of banking law worldwide indicates a growing need for talented professionals in this field. One thing is certain—banking law is never monotonous or boring!

The Association for Banking Law also provides consulting services. While many legal matters must be handled independently or through a proxy, the Association is available for legal opinions, strategy development, and valuable advice.

The Association brings together leading experts with experience in commercial banks, central banks, law practice, and academia. The extensive expertise of its members ensures the quality of all analyses, recommendations, and advice.
